Arthur (Dad) loved aircraft and I loved visiting the flight line with him. When I was six years old I woke when he received a telephone call during the AM hours. He was asked to come to the flight line and take a look at a B-47 which was having control problems after take-off. I eagerly ask to accompany him and he agreed. When we arrived at the hanger Arthur was updated on the problem by the Maintenance Officer and began to look the aircraft over. He put me into a small hole in the aircraft's fuselage and ask me to read some cable gages running to the tail section. I was so excited, well Dad fix the problem and I fell asleep in the hanger. That was in 1958 and I have recently found letters which brought the hole memory back to me, part of which are included below.

Subject: Letter of Appreciation
To: T/Sgt Arthur Courtney

I wish to express my appreciation for your assistance
in repairing the fuel leak in B-47 aircraft ....

The fuel cell section of the ... field maintenance
squadron had changed fuel cells five times in the center
main cavity of the above aircraft with out correcting the
fuel leak. At this time the undersigned decided to request
assistance from the field training detachment. T/Sgt. Courtney
was notified of the difficulty, and immediately began work
on subject aircraft. Under Sgt Courtney's supervision the
fuel leak was isolated and repaired in a minimum amount of
time. The aircraft has since made two (2) flights without
further incident.

Your willingness to help others and excellent knowledge
of the B-47 fuel system reflects great credit on yourself
and the Field Training detachment.

Again I wish to express my appreciation for your
assistance and thank you for a Job well done.

			High Flight
		By: John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
and danced the skies on laughter silvered
		wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling
	mirth
Of sun split clouds and done a hundred
	things
You have not dreamed of wheeled and
	soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind swept heights with
	easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
