Chapter One

The Science Of Life

Biology

From the Greek words bios, meaning "life," and logos, meaning "study."

Biology is the study of the interactions of life.

Question it……

When studying living things, you’ll ask what, why, and how questions.

Example: Why does this living thing possess these particular features? How do these features work?

Why Study Biology?

Human existence depends on the existence of other species. We are all parts of a delicate balance in nature. With a basic knowledge of biology, important decisions can be made regarding our future.

Millions of species of plants and animals are yet to be discovered and named.

Biological research can lead to advances in medical treatment and disease prevention in humans and other species.

It can reveal ways to preserve species that are in danger of disappearing, and solve other problems.
